A Hummingbird Hammock?

Imagine my delight at the sight of a hummingbird in my yard.

Let me first say that I live in a wind tunnel where most of mother nature's glory is blown to heck. If it's not nailed down or growing out of the ground, it's as good as gone. Secondly, hummingbirds are one of those whimsical creatures like unicorns or sock-monsters. You know they exist- you just never see 'em. But to see that one has actually built it's nest , or rather, a hammock, on our Christmas lights (the ones we leave up year-round) is beyond me!

Sitting pretty on her little commode of elegantly intertwined twigs and grasses.

Oh, the wonderment. And believe me when I say that those little devils are freakishly fast. I was barely able to snap a photo of the mythical figure in mid-flight. The rate at which their wings flap is like a million beats per minute. And I suppose there must be eggs in there because she really raised cain when I came near her like a paparazzi. She zipped around me at the speed of light. It was like the flight of the bumblebees on speed! I thought she might peck my eye out! Relax mother-bird. I'm not going to eat your jelly bean-sized eggs. Mmmm, jelly beans...

Look Out!!

I cannot believe you got a picture of that bird so close. When I lived in Oklahoma they were all around, but we could never get near them. You should work for National Geographic with your skills in photographing nature and ancient tribes also known as our friends, or "people you knew from high school."

Remember the picture of all of us in Lake Powell... where we staggered up the hill for effect. Good work you little Photog.
